Coach Hughes' Corner

I have decided to put something together every so often and have appropriately named it 'Coach Hughes' Corner. It will have my thoughts at that time and what I am expecting or looking forward too. I hope you enjoy a little humor along the way too.

Yesterday I was able to go watch the boys play Southwest. It was a tough loss, but I felt like the effort and hustle is a great sign. The Girls basketball team have started off with good wins over good quality teams. There 1 loss is to a very good Mt. Vernon squad.

If you did not know, I have been officiating high school basketball now for 6 years. I feel lucky and privileged to be involved in the game of basketball. To be on the same floor with some of these athletes is a great honor. As an official, I have even gained respect for umpires.(I know some of you are rolling right now). But, honestly, I have learned a lot about my self and I think it has only helped me in my profession. The one thing that has always bothered me, even in coaching, is the coach that knows everything. I am not talking about rules, plays, situations, etc., but the ones that constantly argue(not question) but really argue every judgment call. I believe you can question their judgment once, but don't keep on. (I know, you have fell out of your chair laughing so hard thinking of me on the baseball field)

Basketball is a great game to be involved in. What other major sport can you play in the winter months. I know some will argue football, but I have one comment to that. TO COLD. I love going to a gymnasium and seeing a community support a group of young men or women. Some go overboard, but for the most part, it is genuine support. Schools can really put on a show sometimes. And that show overcasts the game and players. But besides that, it is a great atmosphere to be a part of. I was told by a veteran official that a good night refereeing is when the fans, coaches, and players don't remember you. I take that as you did a good job and didn't try to make yourself part of the game.

Baseball is just around the corner and I am excited. The MLB Winter Meetings concluded last week and my favorite team picked up a pitcher and have offered a major free agent a contract. I don't know what would be a better Christmas present. Matt Holliday signs with the Cardinals or a 6 foot 5 inch Domincan that throws 90 moves in to the Purdy School District(of course if we are wishing, I hope he is left handed).

Christmas is a time for family. I hope you all make time to tell the people that are important to you how much you appreciate them. I know I will. Christmas is also a time for remembering the reason for the season. Give the big guy upstairs some credit too and thank him for your family. Remember the people that are less fortunate and even help an old lady across the street, or load her groceries for her. You never know when you may need help.

Merry CHRISTmas and I will see you next year(2010)
