Alumni Baseball Game

Here is some more information for the Alumni Baseball Game. It seems to be some confusion on times. It will start with batting practice/greet and meet at 10am on Saturday October the 9th. Game will start at 11am. We will play one 9 inning game with the alumni vs the High School Purdy Eagles. The cost is $20 to play as a alumni and this will get you a free shirt and 9 innings of fun and laughter. After the game we will have a chili supper in the school cafeteria. This will be for all alumni, family, friends, and high school players. The cost for the chili supper has not been set, but plan on supporting the baseball team and enjoy the activities. We will also announce the Alumni MVP at the chili supper. I am looking forward to this and plan on making this an annual thing.

15-0!!!!

We moved to 15-0 with a win last night over Exeter. We hit the ball well and got great pitching. After a lead off walk, Reese Stevenson settled in and did not allow another walk or a hit in pitching a 5 inning no hitter. We scored 3 runs in the 1st on a 2 out bases loaded triple by Devon Bennett. Cody Hall got us going with a lead off homerun in the 3rd. We ended up scoring 10 runs in the 3rd inning to put the game away. We play at Crane tomorrow(Thursday) vs Morrisville in the Championship game of the Crane Wood Bat Tournament. Then play at Clever on Friday. Both game times are at 5 PM. See you there!!

Wheaton Again?

I believed I was asked that question above 10 times last week. And yes we played Wheaton again for the 4th time and came out on top for a 4th time. 10-1 win on Friday night moved our record to 14-0. We played well early on and hit the ball hard to put up 9 runs in the first two innings. None was hit harder than the 3 run homer by Cody Hall that cleared way above the score board. We also got another excellent performance from Riley Veith on the mound. He pitched a complete game just allowing the 1 run. We coasted in the later innings and didn't put them away in 5 innings. We had our chances and came up short a few times, but Riley kept throwing strikes and didn't let Wheaton back in the game. We play Exeter at home on Tuesday. Last home game of the fall. See you guys there.

A Little Test From Crane

We got our first real test of the fall last night when we were down 1-0 after 5 innings. We struggled putting the ball and bat together and when we did, we popped up or hit it right at someone. We finally got started in the 6th inning after a leadoff single by Riley Veith and a bunt single by Landon Terry. Cody Hall drew a walk to load the bases and after a Crane balk to tie the score, Kevin Miller came up big with a 2 RBI triple. We would add another run on a ground out later in the inning and with stand a Crane rally in the bottom of the 6th to win 4-2. This win moved us to 13-0 on the season and shows us that we can score late in a game to win. We play Wheaton today if we can get the field to dry out in time. See you all there.

Purdy Fall Classic Champions

We beat Wheaton on Friday night to earn a 1st place finish in our Fall Classic. We played well the entire week, in winning 5 games in a week. But the final game was the icing on the cake. We beat Wheaton in 6 innings 10-0. Riley Veith pitched as well as he can and the result was obvious of that. He allowed 1 hit, 1 BB, while striking out 9. Both the walk and hit was erased by a pick off and caught stealing to allow Riley to face the minimum of 18 hitters in 6 innings. Austin Hancock continued to hit since being inserted in the lineup. He was 3-3 with 2 infield singles and 2 runs scored. Riley added 2 hits of his own and Devon Bennett added 3 RBI's. In the last 6 games(Since the Wednesday game vs Spokane at Crane), our pitchers have only allowed 8 hits and 7 runs. This gives us the opportunity to win on any given night. Our pitching staff has consistently dominated the opponent most of the year. We have a team ERA of 2.14 and an opponent average of .121. We have given up 28 hits in 67 innings pitched. I also don't want to forget about our defense. We had no errors on Friday night, and have only had 14 total on the year. We now turn to one of the toughest parts of our schedule taking our 11-0 record on the road tonight to face Billings at 5.

Fun Fact and Website

I found this website today by accident. Check it out, the author is a baseball historian. http://baseballresearcher.blogspot.com

Also, on this website was this. Didn't know that 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame" was actually a full song. Here is both verse's and the chorus.

Katie Casey was base ball mad.
Had the fever and had it bad;
Just to root for the home town crew,
Ev'ry sou Katie blew.
On a Saturday, her young beau
Called to see if she'd like to go,
To see a show but Miss Kate said, "No,
I'll tell you what you can do."

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."

Katie Casey saw all the games,
Knew the players by their first names;
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Katie Casey knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the gang sing this song:

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."

Good Start to the Purdy Fall Classic!

Despite rain on Wednesday night, we were still able to get our games in last night on the 1st day of the Purdy Fall Classic. We played Hurley the 1st game of the night and came out on top 6-1. Reese Stevenson picked up the win pitching 7 innings and striking out 10. He walked 3 and gave up 2 hits and 1 earned run. Cody Hall got us on the board in the 1st with a 2 run Homer and followed it up with another 2 run Homer in the 3rd. Wheaton and Hurley played the second game of the night with Wheaton coming out on top in 5 innings. We then played Exeter in the 3rd and final game of the night. Landon Terry gets the win while pitching 5 innings and striking out 10 in a 14-0 win in 5 innings. Riley Veith was 3-3 with 4 RBI's. Today's games start at 4pm with Exeter playing Hurley. At 6pm, Wheaton and Exeter play. We play Wheaton following that game.

Changes on our Schedule!

We have some quick changes to let you know about. The Sept 30th game with Exeter has been moved to Sept 28th. Same place and time, just date change. The Championship game of the Crane Wood Bat tournament is scheduled for Sept 30th at Crane at 5:00pm. Please pass this on. Also, don't forget about the Blue Eye game that has been changed to October 5th.

Win and Move On!

We did just that. A 2-0 win over Wheaton and Kyle Robbins put us in the championship game of the Crane Wood Bat Tournament. We scored in the 1st with out recording a hit. A walk, stolen base and moved over by a bunt put Reese Stevenson at 3rd with 1 out. Landon Terry hit a ground ball to the right side to drive in a run. In the second with 2 outs Cameron Terry laced one down the Left field line for a single. He stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on the error by the catcher on a throw to 3rd. That was enough for Kevin Miller. He pitched outstanding. 7 innings, 7 k's, 3 hits, 0 BB's. He is now 2-0 on the year. We play today at 4 and 8 in our tournament if we can get the field ready. Stay tuned and I will try to get updates regarding the field.

7-0!

We moved to 7-0 last night with a 18-0 win over Spokane in 5 innings. Devon Bennett and Reese Stevenson were both 3-4 with 4 RBI's coming from Devon. Austin Hancock was 3-3 in his first start in the offensive lineup. We play Wheaton tomorrow at 7pm at Billings to make up the Crane tournament game.

A Win in the First Round of the Crane Wood Bat Tournament

We beat Spokane last night in the first round of the Crane Wood Bat Tournament. We won 13-4. The win moved us to 6-0 on the year and gave us another chance to play Wheaton in the Semifinals today at 4:30. (Rain may play a role on that.) Reese Stevenson picks up the win pitching 4 innings of 1 hit baseball and striking out 9, walking 2, giving up 2 runs, only 1 earned. Devon Bennett pitched 1 inning striking out 2 and giving up 2 runs, only 1 earned also. Cameron Terry finished the game in style, striking out 6 in 2 innings. Landon Terry was 2-3 with 2 RBI's and Cody Hall and 2 RBI's. As a team we may of set team highs in two categories last night for a single game. 17 K's from our pitchers and 13 SB's as a team. I will let everyone know as soon as we know about tonights game.

Alumni Baseball Game

It is that time again to start thinking about the Alumni game. The date is October 9th. This will be the weekend after the season is over. Batting practice for the alumni starts at 10am with the game starting at 11am. We will play a 9 inning game just like last year. Alumni vs current Purdy Baseball Team. Last year we had close to 20 guys and we will be shooting for that and more this year. Even if you don't want to play, sign up to get your shirt and be a bench coach. The only qualifications is that you have to of graduated from Purdy and played on the baseball team. The charge is $20 this year. This will get you your shirt. All proceeds will go back to the baseball team. We are looking forward to seeing each one of you this fall.

Poll Results!

As you can see, this is the most votes of any of our polls. This means one thing, more people visiting our site. Great. Now pass it on and get more people involved with your favorite team. 13 people believe we will win 12-16 games. I feel this is a possibility. We will play some good teams coming up and can put our name out there to be a team to worry about come spring with some big wins. We had 3 individuals pick 17+. This is also a possibility if we play well every night out and exceptionally well on some nights. We had 1 vote for both 8-11 and 7 or less. 8-11 is still a respectable record but we already have 5 wins. I think someone from Wheaton or Exeter came on here and voted for that 7 or less. What do you think? I will post another poll today.

Lightning Strikes!

We got a win in a shorten game last night due to the weather. Riley Veith picks up the win pitching 4 innings allowing 2 runs. We scored 3 of our 6 runs within the first 4 batters of the game. Reese Stevenson lead off with a single and after Tyler Scott(running for Stevenson) stole second, Riley singled to Rightfield. Scott was thrown out at the plate, Riley moved up on the throw. Then the power came. Landon Terry doubled in Riley and Cody Hall it a Homerun to left field to give us an early lead. After Wheaton cut the lead to 3-2 in the 4th, lightening became an issue and suspended play for about 30 minutes. When we got back on the field, we scored 3 more runs in the 5th. Cameron Terry came in and pitched a good 5th inning, getting 2 ground balls and a pop up. The umpires called the game in the 6th inning. 6-2 Win. We have a change in schedule coming up. The Blue Eye game on 9/21 has been changed to 10/5. Same place and time, just changed date. Have a good holiday weekend and see you guys back after the 3 day weekend.

Coach Hughes' Corner

ITS BACK!! I know some of you are just sitting on the edge of your seat to see the next edition of the almost not famous Coach Hughes' Corner. Well the Fall edition kicks of right now. If you are not familiar with this or the website, lets review. This is for information regarding the Purdy Baseball Program and the young men that play the game. This is for positive things only. If your negative, it's gone/removed. I enjoy your comments and your support, so don't hesitate to sign in and post something positive about your favorite team. I try to put a weekly poll regarding something baseball or current event related. This post is usually just my rants and raves about something not so exciting. LOL. You might laugh, cry, or even want to throw something at your computer. (Like the bobble head doll that you all have of me, right?) So, without any more waiting, lets get it on.

The Corner is the first one I have done to give credit to the right people. As most of you know, our fall season was cut last May by the troubling economic situations. However, the board graciously allowed us to raise the funds to keep this very important part of our program. Fall season is a huge building block into the success that we have had over the past 5 years since I have been here. We continue to get better every fall record wise(with the exception of last fall taking a few more loses than the previous year) due to the fact that we get more experience. The fall is an oppurtunity to get some kids playing time before the spring starts. We get a chance to get innings on the mound that every other team in our district does not. Time at the plate, time in practice and time to learn the game. No one this year in our district plays fall baseball. What an advantage.

With that said above, I want to thank some individuals or businesses that have made an impact in my 5+ years here with this program and this summers funds for this fall.

The last individual that I want to thank is someone behind the scenes. Most of you don't know what it is like to be married to a coach. I learned along time ago to not take a loss home with me. (I believe I was told this exactly, "We didn't make the errors, or strikeout. Its not our fault, so don't blame us.") But my wife has put up with me over the past 5+ years and still comes to almost every game. Thinks of your sons as her own. Makes them cookies, has t-shirts made with some of there names on them, scolds them for inappropriate language or behaviors, praises them for good, rides with me to see them play a college game, or to a basketball game, been to graduations, and sits right there by the dugout day in and day out. And not once does she complain. She is why I continue everyday. Without her support, I wouldn't be at Purdy High School and I thank her for that.

Big things can happen with the support of everyone. And I, just one coach, Thank each and everyone of you for that support.
Coach Hughes

Good Win

We beat a good Golden City team last night 6-2. Landon Terry pitched a complete game 3hitter, while striking out 10 and walking only 1. Reese Stevenson and Cody Hall had 2 hits apiece. Riley Veith got us on the board in the 1st inning with a 2 run line drive homerun to center. We are watching the much needed rain fall today. I hope it rains all day and then drys up for the game tomorrow at Wheaton at 5. Having really good crowds. Come over Thursday to Wheaton.
