University of Saint Mary Academic Vice President Dr. Bryan Le Beau announced the Fall 2011 Dean's Honor List, and 12 student-athletes represented the baseball program by having a 3.5 GPA or better. Overall, the University of Saint Mary baseball program accomplished a Fall 2011 team GPA of 3.1.

In my years of coaching, I have a ton of memories. Memories of Wins, Losses, and even off field memories. I have coached 100's of student athletes in 100's of games over the past 10 years. I have fond memories of everyone of those athletes. I am still in contact with a young man by the name of Will Blandin that is serving our country in Iraq at this time. He was my first ever 2nd basemen on the first ever team I coached in Leavenworth KS on the 16 and Under Leavenworth Travelers. These people have been a huge part of any success that I have had. I hope I have had some affect on there lives like they have had on me. I was asked the other day by an individual I know, what my fondest or greatest memory as a coach was. It has taken me 3 days to remember most of them, and I have found my most memorable moment as a coach. I even researched and found the newspaper article that goes with it. Greatest day in my coaching career in my own opinion. Here is the article written by Lee Stubblefield for the Monett and Cassville Paper on May 27, 2009

When the Stockton Tigers chased both Mason Roller and Kevin Miller off the hill in the top half of the first inning with an eight-run barrage Tuesday afternoon, the Purdy Eagles were desperately looking for a miracle. Roller faced seven batters, and the only out recorded in his favor was a sacrifice bunt by Robbe Ewing, Stockton's second hitter. Miller suffered a similar fate, throwing to six hitters, and watching the lead grow to 8-0 with only two outs on the board.

Light-hitting catcher Riley Veith became the third Purdy pitcher of the inning, and he held the Tigers in check for six innings while his slugging teammates earned ties at 8-8 and 11-11 enroute to winning the MSHSAA Class 2A sectional game, 16-13.

Trailing 8-2 in the bottom of the second, Purdy roared back with a vengeance to tie the game at 8 on the strength of a Trent Goetz two-run blast. The Eagles chased unbeaten starter Robbe Ewing in the second, when the Tiger ace faced eight batters, was charged with eight runs, and only recorded four outs in his starter's role.

Stockton regained the lead in the top of the third, as Kevin Martin and Craig Johnson stroked back-to-back RBI singles for a 10-8 advantage. Nick Engleman, who relieved Ewing in the second, shut down Purdy in the bottom half of the third inning, facing only five batters and holding the Eagles scoreless.
Matt Coyle led off the Stockton fourth with a double, and scored on Buck Walker's one-out single to left to up the lead to 11-8. Vieth avoided further damage by coaxing a weak fly ball off the bat of Ewing, and then Blake Williams doubled Walker off first base on the play.

"Double plays were among the many keys for us," Coach Joshua Hughes said. "We turned three in the game and those extra outs with men on base were very imporant."

Purdy failed to score again in the fourth frame, stranding Cody Hall at third base and Kevin Miller at second.

Vieth returned to the mound for Purdy in the fifth, and caged the Tigers on just 16 pitches. Engleman drew a walk to start the inning, but Martin grounded to second and the Eagles turned a textbook double play. Johnson smacked a single to center, but Mason Roller ran down a long foul past the Stockton dugout to record the third out.
Still down by 11-8, Purdy turned two walks and singles by Blake Williams and Derek Fulp into the tying runs. Two runs crossed the plate following Fulp's hit, and Johnson, the Stockton catcher, was injured trying make a tag at the plate. Jordan Abercrombie took over behind the plate for the Tigers.
Vieth retired the Tigers in the sixth inning on 16 more pitches, and a classic piece of trickeration that thwarted a budding Stockton rally.
With Tigers on second and third with one out in the top of the sixth, Coach Hughes rolled the dice for Purdy. The pitcher wheeled to execute the pickoff at second base, the runner slid back to the bag, and the Purdy infielders were running panic-stricken into center field after the ball.
Stockton's Matt Coyle broke for home from third base and was out by 10 feet at the plate. Hughes had dusted off the fake pickoff play in such a critical situation that everyone in the stadium bought it. Walker flied out to deep centerfield on a 3-1 pitch and the Eagles had shutout the Tigers in consecutive innings, and preserved the 11-11 tie.

Stockton came unraveled in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Miller reached on a one-out single. Goetz followed with a sacrifice bunt, but the throw for the sure out rocketed past the first baseman and bounded all the way to the right field fence. Miller scored to give the Eagles their first lead of the game, and Goetz wound up at third base on the play.

Landon Terry pushed his suicide bunt attempt too far, and Goetz was out at the plate. Terry ran all the way to second base when the Tigers thought time had been called. Mason Roller drove in Terry with a crushing double to center to build the Purdy lead to 13-11.

Engleman balked Roller over to third base in the midst of issuing a four-pitch walk to Chris Bennett. Then Blake Williams hit a towering three-run homer that just cleared the right field fence 280' away. The Eagles took the field for the seventh inning with a 16-11 lead.

Veith, visibly tiring in the heat, took the hill for the final inning. Ewing singled and Engleman walked, before Vieth struck out Martin on four pitches. Johnson singled to left to load the bases, but Ethan Meeks hit a wobbly fly to Blake Williams in right for the second out.

Derek Stockton followed with a nearly identical fly ball to right, but this time Williams struggled with the blinding sun and two runs scored on his bobble.

Hughes strode to the mound and handed the ball to Trent Goetz as Vieth received a standing ovation from the Purdy crowd. Goetz secured the victory, striking out Coyle on four pitches.

Gave me goosebumps reading this and remembering that day. I had forgot about the catch Mason made, using Goetz to get the last out, Fulp driving in two. However, I didn't forget Veith's performance, Goetz and Williams homeruns, Rollers ball going further than Goetz and Williams combined and he only got a double, and the 8-0 deficit to a very good team.

It has been a while since I was able to give some time to this web-site. I have had some other things going on and really busy. Now that it is getting close to baseball, I am back at it.

As a referee, I see a lot of local and not so local teams. I have compiled a list of my Top 5 in both boys and girls that I have refereed. Since I can not and will not referee a Purdy High School game, I have to leave them off the list. Remember, these are teams I have had the privilege to referee.

I spend my winter refereeing basketball and enjoying my family. This year I had the opportunity to enjoy a lot of hours deer hunting with my boys. Trey spent 4 hours hunting and seen deer both times he hunted and connected on a young 7 point buck. Travis spent over 30 hours hunting with me and never seen a deer. Hunter also spent a lot of time and didn't get a deer. He seen some, but couldn't close the deal. Sometimes it is the way it is. I was fortunate enough to fill both of my tags with a doe and a buck this year and have provided some meat for our family. The deer burger is already gone, but we have steaks, jerky, and roast left. Looking forward to next year to give Travis another opportunity.

Looking forward to some late season basketball games and leading up to baseball season.

We are working on some fun and exciting baseball for this upcoming spring. We will begin off season work outs soon. We have 9 individuals participating in a winter hitting league and a few going back to there pitching coach. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year.

We have some schedule changes due to Marionville, Aurora, and Blue Eye dropping us from there schedule. We have added Miller and working on some others. Still planning on the Cassville and Monett tournaments. Also working on some extra JV games and a tournament.

Cody Hall Signs a Letter of Intent with C of O!!!!

Purdy's Cody Hall has verbally committed to play Baseball at College of the Ozarks at Point Lookout, Missouri and will sign a national letter of intent on Tuesday, November 8th, 2011 at 2:15 at Purdy High School. The signing will take place in the high school Library. You can check in the school on the east side at the district office.

Cody has been an asset to the Purdy Baseball Eagles as a starter since his freshmen year. He has played numerous positions in his high school career; Catcher, 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, Pitcher, and all 3 outfield positions. He plans to work hard to earn a spot in to the Bobcats outfield. He is a strong athletic player with great speed.

Alumni Game!!!!!

The Alumni came to play, they beat the Varsity and JV on Saturday. Some quick high lights. Riley Veith pitched 2 innings after Bobby Stevenson allowed two base runners, and had a triple at the plate. Tyler Faulk hit a BOMB, still flying in the outer atmosphere I think. Chris Keeling had a great day at the plate. Coby Utter still throws the ball hard, and hits it hard. I should know, I still have a bruise on my hip. The fellowship and competitive banter was above any you can describe. I enjoy this day every year. Thanks for making it wonderful. We raised around 500 dollars to help with our program. The pictures below are just a few of the memories.

13-4 Record In The Fall!!!

We beat Crane on Monday night 13-1 to end our fall with a record of 13-4. We got a big performance out of our bats and pitching. Reese Stevenson struck out 16 and allowed 3 hits and 1 run in a complete game. Martin Sanchez had 3 hits and 3 RBI's to pace our offense.

Our JV won 7-1 to move the JV record to 9-3. Overall, a very successful fall. Look forward to offseason workouts and Spring Baseball.

Lost last 2 games!!!

Clever beat us 4-3 on Friday night. Reese takes his second loss on the year, but pitched well with 8k's. Our bats left us when we needed them and we took our 3rd loss of the year.

On Monday, Forsyth beat us 11-2 Giving Cameron his 1st loss of the fall. He was bitten by the error bug early in the game and it caused an inflation in his pitch count. He pitched well enough to win, just like Reese against Clever, but couldn't get support from our bats.

We will be playing Saturday at the Alumni Game here at 1pm and at Crane on Monday at 5pm. See you there.

Beat Exeter

We beat Exeter last night 21-0 in 5 innings. Devon Bennett picked up the win. Britten Hardwick got us on the board with a 2 RBI single in the 2nd inning and then we rolled after that. A lot of big at bats by some younger guys that got a chance to get some needed varsity time. Willy Click had 2 hits in 2 at bats. We play at Clever tonight at 5pm. See you there.

4-3 Win At Wheaton On Friday

We beat Wheaton 4-3 on Friday behind the left arm of Cameron Terry and 2 2-out hits. Cody Hall connected for a 3 run homer with 2 outs and Keevin Walker drove in the 4th run with a 2 out RBI single. Cameron pitched all 7 innings and struck out 10 on his way to his 4th in of the fall. We play at Exeter Thursday at 5pm.

JV won 5-4 in an exciting 5 inning game, this being the 3rd game in a row for a JV win in our last few at bats.

Alumni Game!!!!

We will be doing our 3rd annual alumni game on October 8th at 1pm. To be considered alumni, you have to of graduated from Purdy and played High School Baseball. We will be playing two 5 inning games. Purdy's Varsity will play the 1st game and the JV will play the 2nd game. The alumni may play however they want. Alumni need to pay $20 to play and this will get them a t-shirt and food afterwards. We will be doing a supper after the games in the cafeteria that all others may stay and enjoy for the price of $5. This is one of our main fundraisers and one of the days I look forward too throughout the year. Please plan to attend even if you don't want to play. Tyler Faulk is back to back MVP!!!! He will be making a run at 3 in a row. Please let me know your shirt size and if you plan to play by October 1st. You can email, call or text me at anytime. Big Win Over Blue Eye!!!

We beat Blue Eye 11-1 last night behind Reese Stevenson's 12 strikeout performance and his 3 RBI triple. We also got big hits from Cody Hall and Keevin Walker, as they both had 2 hits a piece. We scored early and often to get us a 8-0 lead and scored 3 in the 5th after they scored 1 in the 4th to end it in 5 innings. We play Thursday at 5pm at Crane. See you there.

Coach B Wins Varsity and JV Game!!!!

We beat Billings 5-1 last night under the guidance of Coach B. Cameron Terry pitched 7 innings, striking out 8, walking 1, allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run. He was supported by Devon Bennett's 2 RBI double in the 1st and Tyler Scott's 2 out triple in the 3rd. Reese Stevenson and Scott had 2 hits a piece. Austin Hancock added the other RBI. We also came from behind and beat there JV on a walk off hit by Alex Mareth. He also picked up the win. We play Blue Eye tonight at 5pm at home.

We beat Hurley on Thursday night 13-5, Devon Bennett picked up the win backed by Cody Hall's 3-4 night, 2 2B's and 1 3B. We lost to Wheaton 7-0 on Friday and Alex Mareth had our lone hit on the night. Saturday's games got rained out from the much needed rain, I just wish it would waited to rain after 3pm on Saturday. We have no make up date yet on these games. As soon as I do, I will pass it on. We play Billings tonight at home if the field will dry. See you at 5pm.

Cameron Terry picked up the win last night and Austin Hancock had 2 hits. Cody Hall added 3 RBI's to support Cameron early on in the game. We scored 9 runs in the 2nd inning and gave me the opportunity to get some good experience at the varsity level for some of the younger guys. I believe there was 3 varsity debuts last night. We play Spokane tonight at 5pm at Crane to finish the Crane Wood Bat tournament.

Jumping on back to back pitches and a 4-4 night puts our middle of the order right in the middle of the win last night. Reese Stevenson and Cody Hall hit back to back homeruns in the 3rd inning but to not be outdone, Cameron Terry goes 4-4, with a walk off single in the 7th. Stevenson picks up his 4th win in as many chances and had 14 ks and 1 BB. He allowed 5 runs, but only 3 earned. We play at Golden City today at 5pm. See you there.

Suffered Our 1st Loss Thursday!

Wheaton beat us 11-1 in 5 innings in the Semi Finals of the Crane tournament. We will play 6 games this week. Mon at home vs Spokane, Tues at Golden City, Wed vs Spokane at Crane for 3rd place in the Crane tournament, and a game Thur, Fri, and Sat in the Purdy Fall Classic. We beat Billings last night 4-1 in the opening round of the Crane Wood Bat Tournament. Reese Stevenson gets the win, pitching 7 innings with 3 hits, 3BB, and 13 K's. Devon Bennett and Alex Mareth had RBI singles and we scored another run on an error and a 1st and 3rd situation. We play tonight vs Wheaton at 4pm at Billings. Hope to see you there.

4-3 Over Our Neighbor To The West!!!

We beat Wheaton last night 4-3 behind an excellent performances from Jr. Lefthander, Cameron Terry. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 BB's, and had 7 K's. For the first 4 innings he picked up his defense after some big mistakes or errors. He bent a little in the 5th after an error, but did not break. After giving up 2 runs he stopped the rally and kept us in the game. The rest, as they say, is history. Our offense came up in the 6th down 2-1 and scratched out 3 runs on 3 hits and a BB. Reese Stevenson tied the game up with a RBI single and Devon Bennett drove in the go ahead run with 2 outs. We then scored on a balk to make it 4-2. Stevenson allowed 1 unearned run in the 7th, but got the save. Stevenson, Bennett and Hall each had 1 RBI. Bennett finished the night 2-3

To top off the first 2 weeks of the fall season, we move to 4-0 in Varsity play
Our JV is also 4-0 and playing really well. We are getting some big time pitching and hitting out of the younger guys and they are pushing for Varsity playing time.

We beat Galena last night 11-0 in 5 innings. Reese Stevenson pitched 5 innings, gave up 3 hits and 1 BB, but struck out 12. He was backed by Keevin Walkers 3 RBI's and Devon Bennett and Austin Hancock's 2 hits a piece. Every starter had a hit to help us offensively have a great game. We play tonight at Golden City at 5pm, no JV game!

Our JV moved to 3-0 on the fall also last night. Having a good year on the diamond so far. Come out and support us.

We beat Exeter tonight 18-4. Our pitchers did give up 4 runs, but without a hit allowed. Devon Bennett earned the wi. And Cody Hall and Keevin Walker helped to throw a no hitter. Cameron Terry had 3 hits and 3 RBIS. Cody Hall continues to drive in runs with 5 RBIS from a double and a triple. Devon helped with 2 hits of his own and 3 RBIS. We play Galena MO at 5 pm on Monday. We opened our fall season up with a 10-0 win over Hurley. Reese Stevenson picks up the win going the entire 6 innings and only giving up 2 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 12. He was supported by his 2 hits and Cody Hall's big day at the plate. Cody had 2 homeruns and a double and drove in 5 runs. We play Exeter Friday at home at 5pm. See you all there.

Fall Baseball Is Here!!!!

I know it has been a while since I have updated or posted anything, sorry. But, the excitement of a new school year and another Fall Baseball Season is here. We have 19 young men out for this fall and looking forward to building on the seasons we have had in the past. With hard work and individuals stepping up, I am looking forward to what this year holds. We play a good schedule in the fall and look to match or increase our win totals of last year. This will be tough, but we will attempt it. Our first game is Monday, August 22nd here vs Hurley at 4:30. Don't forget to get with me if you have ordered a Conference Champion T-shirt and have yet to receive it. See you all at the ball park.

Our 2011 spring baseball season is still being recognized. Reese Stevenson was named to the 2nd team All Ozarkssports.net infield team. This covers the entire Joplin, Springfield, and East of there. This is another great honor that he should be congratulated on. The fact that I never turned in a stat or recommendation on this means that Joboo seen the talent and ability all by himself. Speaks to the great spring Reese had. I feel we should of had more selections, but this is still good for Reese, Purdy, and the baseball program. Congrats!

Veith Signs To Play College Baseball!!!!

Riley Veith signed a letter of intent on Monday to play college baseball at the University Of St. Mary in Leavenworth KS. This is a great accomplishment and honor that is proof of all the hard work Riley has put in during his baseball career. Riley will go in with a chance to pitch and possibly play the outfield. I want to personally wish him all the luck and give my advice, work hard and hang in there. Good luck Riley.

The MHSBCA announced there all state teams this week. We had 3 young men recognized on the Class 2 team. Riley Veith was named 1st Team DH/Utility. Reese Stevenson was named 1st team Infielder. And Kevin Miller was named Honorable Mention Pitcher. This is an honor and a great accomplishment for the hard work they and the entire team put in. I know all 3 could of not done this without there team mates. If you see them, congratulate them on this honor.

We ended our season on Tuesday with a 2-0 lost to Clever. We ended a great season with a 22-5 record, which maybe the best record for this baseball program here at Purdy. If anyone knows, let us know on here. This is an accomplishment that I want these boys to be proud of. We had 7 All-Conference picks and 5 All-District picks, We won the Ozark 7 Conference for a 5th time in the 6 years that I have been here and our 4th District title. These are all great accomplishments and if you see any of these boys, tell them good job. I will be announcing post season honors at the Baseball Banquet at 7pm tomorrow night. See you all there.

Sectional Contest

I know most of you like the fact that my day has been hectic, because that means that we have won our district. I have some news to pass on and let everyone know what the next few days hold. We will play Clever at 6pm on Monday, May 23rd at Clever. Admission will be $6 for ages 6 and up. Practice will be like normal for Wed-Fri. We will then practice at 9pm on Saturday morning. Saturday morning will be a hitting practice only. We will be out of school at noon on Monday and we will hit at 1:30 before we leave at 2:45 to go to Clever. This is a good time to be a Purdy Eagle. Lets pass the word around and get everyone out to support these young men as they play in the 2011 Missouri Class 2 State Playoffs.

YES!!!!!!!!!! We won the district title last night 5-1 vs Diamond. We played errorless baseball and Kevin Miller pitched great. He pitched all 7 innings and held Diamond to one earned run and had 6k's and 2 BBs. Devon Bennett and Riley Veith came up with big 2 RBI hits and Reese Stevenson added the other RBI. Play of the game goes to Devon Bennett, as he threw out the runner trying to score from second on a base hit and then Riley hanging on as the runner plowed him over. Great play by both. Austin Hancock had a diving grab in the 7th inning. We play Clever on next Monday, not sure on time yet.

We beat Sarcoxie on Saturday 10-0. It took us a while to get our bats going, but scored 7 in the 6th to end the game. Riley Veith and Landon Terry both had 3 hits and Landon picked up his 7th win on the year. We then turned around and played Miller last night and won 5-3. Our bats were not hot but warm enough to get the win. Kevin Miller and a 2 RBI single and picked up the save for Riley Veith. Riley struck out 8 over 5 and 1/3 innings. Kevin pitched a perfect 1 and 2/3 innings. Tonight at 6pm we play Diamond for the District Championship. Come out and support us at Ash Grove.

Senior Night Goes Off With A Bang!!!

We beat Clever last night 4-3 on Senior Night. All 3 Seniors had a say. Riley Veith pitched 6 innings, while striking out 12 to get the win and Kevin Miller shut the door in the 7th to earn the save. Landon Terry drove in the tying and winning runs with a 1 out 2 RBI double in the bottom of the 6th down 3-2. Riley and Cameron Terry added an RBI. Devon Bennett had 2 hits. We finished the regular seasons with some firsts. We were undefeated at home 10-0, we have a 19-4 record going into districts, and our 4 losses are to Class 3 schools. We beat all the Class 1 and 2 schools we played and some Class 3 schools. We now start our second part of the year 0-0 just like everyone else. You lose, you go home. Districts are tomorrow at Ash Grove. We play Sarcoxie at 12:30. Travel up to watch us play.

We Sweep A Double Header!!!!!

We beat Galena last night 10-5 and 13-5. Reese Stevenson picks up the win in game one. He pitched 5 innings giving up 3 earned runs, while walking 3 and striking out 9. Landon Terry gets a 2 inning save, while only allowing 1 hit over 2 scoreless innings. Riley Veith was 3-4 with a Grandslam in the 6th inning with 2 outs and the score 6-5. Reese and Cameron Terry added 2 RBI's a piece. In game 2, Devon Bennett gets his 1st Varsity start and earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings. Cameron Terry pitched excellent in relief. Reese was 4-4 with 5 RBI's and a solo homer and 2 doubles. Cody Hall was 3-4 with 4 RBI's and a 3 run homer. Riley and Reese both finish the day with 6 hits. We are now 18-4 and play Clever on Thursday for Senior Night. Come out and support your Baseball Eagles and our 3 Seniors!

We got beat 4-0, Kevin Miller and the defense kept us in the game, but our bats didn't come with us last night. We had some oppurtunities to get on the board the entire game, but left runners on most of the night. Cody Hall had 2 or our 6 hits on the night and balls were hit hard, but right at people. We competed with a very good Cassville team and one of the better pitchers in the area, but just came up short. We play Galena tonight in a Varsity Double Header starting at 4:30 at Purdy. We beat East Newton on Friday night 9-5. We scored 4 in the 1st, with the big blow coming from Kevin Miller and his 3 run homer. Cody hall would add a 2 run homer later in the game and Landon Terry picked up his 6th win on the year. We then got an oppurtunity to play at Hammons Field in Springfield on Sunday, mothers day. And we brought home a win for the MOMMA'S. Reese Stevenson and Devon Bennett both had 2 hits and our defense was perfect on the day. Our pitching combined to have 14 K's, allowed 4 hits and a few walks. This lead to the 3-0 win that was our 13th straight and moved our overall record to 16-3. We play Cassville tonight at there place at 5. See you there.

We are Conference Champs after a while of not having the title or sharing it with someone else. We beat Wheaton last night 11-3. Riley Veith picks up the win and gets support from his own bat, along with Kevin Millers 3 hits, and Cody Hall and Devon Bennetts 2 hits. Good job boys, CONFERENCE CHAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!

We have had a busy week of baseball. We got rained out on Monday vs Monett. No date available at this time to make it up. We played Marionville on Tuesday and snuck out of town with a 10-6 win. They only had 2 hits the entire game, but our walks and errors lead to some runs. We finally got on the board in the 4th after 3 innings of 0 runs. Reese Stevenson was 3-4 and Riley Veith was 2-2.

Yesterday morning was the district seed meeting and we came out of that with the 1 seed. We play May 14th at 12:30 vs Sarcoxie at Ash Grove. Other seeds are Ash Grove 2, Diamond 3, College Heights and Miller are the 4 and 5 seeds. Pierce City is the 6th and Southwest is the 7.

Coach Hughes' Corner

What to talk about on this edition of the almost world famous Coach Hughes' Corner. Well, I had it all figured out. We were going to discuss(well, me type, you read) the ins and outs of coaches meetings regarding seed meeting, all-conference picks, and so forth. But after last nights world news, I am going to tell you where, what, and how I felt about 10 years ago.

It was a normal Fall morning, September 11th 2001. I was in my Junior year of college at St. Mary College in Leavenworth, KS. I had a pretty good routine by this time and was taking really early morning classes due to baseball practice and workouts. I had a 7:00 am Human Sexuality and Psychology class. I got up and went to class like normal, and then would stop by the register office on my way back to breakfast and get some candy and talk to the ladies in the office. This is when I first heard of the plane accidently hitting a building in New York. I immediately skipped breakfast and went to the dorm rooms to watch tv. By the time I got there, the lobby on 4th floor was full. The 2nd plane had hit and we were now under attack. It hit really hard to us on 4th floor for 2 reasons. We were less than 5 miles from Fort Leavenworth, which is where most of the higher ups in the army were stationed. Rumor had it that, if someone wanted to hurt the US military, Fort Leavenworth was the best target. This put us all on edge and of course rumors and gossip began to fly immediately that Fort Leavenworth could be attacked. This was devastating to most everyone, but not the main reason of the 2 that we on 4th floor was concerned. Dan Flygare was a Freshman and lived right across the hall from me. We had became really good friends and hung out all the time. After the 2nd plane crashed and it was announced that a 3rd one was suspected of being high jacked, Dan lost it emotionally. After calming him down, we found out the reason. His dad is a pilot for Delta Air lines and was scheduled to fly out of New York that morning. He or his mother could not reach his dad and no reports of which planes were hijacked was being released. After hours of watching the tv, going to no class that day, and comforting a friend, we received word that his dad was ok. He was not allowed off his plane due to the circumstances and his flight was grounded after the 1st plane crashed. He had left his cell phone in his bag that was in the baggage part of the plane and could not contact anyone while he was on the plane. I remember feeling numb and shocked more than anything. I was just 20 years old and remember being told in high school and college history classes that we, the United States, were the 800 pound gorilla and that we wouldn't be attacked on our soil again. I don't think I really ever felt mad or angered during that day. More of "I can't believe this." I had no ties to New York or the army other than friends of friends. I was still young enough to have the 'who cares' attitude. But as the days went by, and the 'normal' activities of America started back up, I, like many Americans became upset or mad. Everytime a baseball game or football game came on tv and they played the National Anthem, or CNN would report that Bush was sending more troops to find the person or people responsible, I would get even more upset. As time went by, my anger would reside some, but I would never forget.
Now almost 10 years later, I am reminded of my anger towards some individual or group of individuals that I never knew. I am also a firm believer that this action taken on Osama Bin Laden, one person, does not make up for the 1000's that were killed because of his beliefs and reasons. I, like so many other Americans, don't believe in the doings of these terrorists. And believe that we should stand up for our fallen family and friends. But, being a Christian, I am having trouble agreeing with these actions, even though I celebrated with other Americans late last night and this morning. One of the most misinterpreteded verses in the bible is the verse that says, "An eye for and eye......". But in Matthew 5:38-39 Jesus clearly tells us, "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." I am not sure how to hold this up.
This kind of takes us to my 1st idea on this Corner. I can't wait for our seed meeting on Wednesday morning. I have been stewing and upset all winter and spring regarding this district and the way a few coaches turned against us in a way. We have to go to Ash Grove because of some coaches voting against us hosting it. And those coaches will be looking at a low seed. Karma! Oh, wait, Coach Hughes, turn the other cheek. We beat Exeter last night to force a winner take all vs Wheaton for the conference on Wednesday night. Landon Terry had 3 hits and Riley Veith had 2 hits, 1 being a homerun to support Kevin Millers 6 inning gem. We struggled early but put some late inning pressure on them and added timely hitting to pull out our 9th win in a row.

I was going to do A Coach Hughes Corner for Post 300, but it snuck up on me. I will work on a corner for next week. Been a while since I have done one.

Last Night was another win for the good guys. We beat Pierce City 10-2 to move our record to 11-3 on the year. We scored 4 in the 1st and 3 apiece in the 4th and 5th innings. Cody Hall and Landon Terry lead us at the plate. Hall was 2-3 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs. Landon Terry was 3-4 with 2 runs scored. Landon picks up the win, pitching 4 innings giving up 1 unearned run and striking out 7. Reese Stevenson pitched 2 great innings giving up 1 hit and striking out 5. Devon Bennet pitched the 7th. We were a little rusty after having about 10 days off due to the rain. But came out on top. We play Exeter tonight in the conference game at Exeter at 4:30. Show up and support the boys as they continue there quest for a conference title.

We beat McAuley 15-5 last night in 5 innings to move us to 2-0 in the conference. They struck 1st with 4 hits and 3 runs in the 1st inning. But we took the punch on the chin and responded with a knock out in the bottom of the first. We scored 7 runs in the 1st and 5 in 3rd. Cody Hall ended the game in the bottom of the 5th with a lead off homerun. He ended the day 2-2 with 3 RBI's to go with the homer. Cameron Terry was 2-3 with 3 RBI's. Kevin Miller also had 3 RBI's on a 2 run double and a RBI groundout. Riley picks up his 2nd win on the year and gets back on the mound after a week plus absent due to injury. He walked 5 but struck out 10. We play Diamond on Thursday at there house at 4:30.

We won our 6th game in a row to move us to 9-3 on the year by beating Jasper 14-0 last night. We scored 2 runs in the 1st on a 2 Run Homer by Devon Bennet. We scored 8 runs in the 2nd on 5 hits and a few mistakes by Jasper defense. We added 4 more in the 3rd, 1 by a lead-off homer by Reese Stevenson. Kevin Miller picks up his 3rd win on the year(3-0) by pitching 5 innings giving up 1 hit 0 BB's and striking out 6. Devon and Reese were both 2-3, Devon with 3 RBI's. Cody Hall and Cameron Terry each had 2 hits. It was also good to get Riley back behind the plate to sure up our defense on the infield. We play McAuley tonight at 4:30 at home for our 2nd conference game on the year. See you there.

We beat Sarcoxie 12-3 last night. That moves us to 4-0 against District opponents. Landon Terry picked up his 4th win on the year. Cody Hall was 2-4 with a 2B, HR and 3 RBI's. Reese Stevenson was 3-4, Kevin Miller, Cameron Terry, and Thomas Garcia each had 2 hits. We had 7 doubles on the night. We played well offensively, but had 4 errors. The Blue Eye game tonight has already been canceled. They had to know by 11:00am because they are out of school for a 1/2 day today. I couldn't see the field drying out and had to make the call earlier than I would of liked. Practice after school today. We play Jasper at home on Monday. See you there.

Another Non-Conference Win!

We beat Wheaton last night in the non-conference game 5-2. We struck first in the 2nd inning with a RBI single by Cameron Terry and then scored our 2nd run on another RBI from Cameron in the 4th. In the 5th with 2 outs, we strung together 4 straight baserunners with 2 outs to score 3 runs. Austin Hancock reached by an error, and Landon Terry was hit by a pitch. Kevin Miller followed that up with an RBI double and Riley Veith drove 2 in with a single. Kevin Miller gets the win to move to 2-0 on the year pitching a complete game, striking out 8, walking 1, allowing 6 hits and only 1 of the runs were earned. We play Sarcoxie at 4:30 there on Thursday. We are now 7-3 on the year.

Win Opens Our Conference Play!

With a 10-3 win over Southwest, we open conference play 1-0. We struck early with a RBI single from Landon Terry after Austin Hancock doubled in the 1st inning. Riley Veith drove in another run in the 1st to give us a 2-0 lead. After Southwest scored in the 2nd inning we went on to score 8 more runs in the next 4 innings. Southwest scored 2 in the 7th to make the final 10-3. After 1 out in the 3rd, the coaching staff noticed Riley in pain. I made a trip out there to find out he had tweaked his leg a little. After a couple of more pitches it got worse and had to exit the game early. Landon came in and got out of the 3rd inning and pitched a scoreless 4th and 5th inning to pick up the win in relief. Cameron Terry pitched the 6th and 7th and recorded 4 k's in the process. Austin Hancock was 2-4 with 3 RBI's. Cameron, Kevin Miller, Cody Hall and Devon Bennett each had 2 hits on the night. We play Wheaton tonight at home in the non-conference game at 4:30. See you there.

Win Moves Us To 5-3

We beat Aurora last night 5-3 moving our record to 5-3. With a great pitching performance by Reese Stevenson, 6 IP 5K's 1ER and 0BB's, we were able to score late and earn the W. Reese and Landon Terry was both 2-4 with 2 RBI's. Riley Veith was 3-3 at the plate and earned the save pitching the 7th, 1IP, 2K's, 1ER. Our other hit was by Austin Hancock.

In the JV game we lost 2-1 with the highlight of Timmy Block making a great catch in left field.

We have a busy week next week with 4 games, starting Monday at home vs Southwest(1st Conference game). Tuesday game at Home vs Wheaton is the non-conference game. Both games start at 4:30.

13-3 Over College Heights in 6 Innings!

We beat College Heights 13-3 in 6 innings last night for our 1st home game of the spring. It took us a while to get going but put up 11 runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings. After being down 3-2 in the bottom of the 4th, we plated 3 runs on one swing of the bat. Reese Stevenson with 2 outs hit a 3 run homer(his 3rd hit on the day) over the Right Center fence. After that we didn't look back. Landon Terry picked up the win with 5 innings pitched only allowing 2 earned runs and Kevin Miller pitched a scoreless 6th. Cameron Terry, Landon Terry and Riley Veith each had 2 hits. We put together 12 hits in 6 innings in a 40 degree windy afternoon. Hopefully this is a good sign for whats to come. We play Aurora Thursday at Aurora at 5pm. See you there.

We lost 6-0 on Friday night to Monett. We were down 2-0 going into the bottom of the 6th and a few hits and an error and Coach Hughes putting 2 Cubs on base caused us to go down 6-0. We played well and gave a really good Monett team a run for there money. We out hit them, had less errors, had more base runners, but didn't have more runs. We turned around on Saturday and beat East Newton 10-6. After giving them 5 runs in the 6th inning to make the score 7-6 we scored 3 in the 7th and held them for the win. Kevin Miller picks up the win, Riley Veith had 3 hits and 3 RBI's. In our next game we got beat 7-6 by Seneca. We took a 6-5 lead to the bottom of the 7th and Seneca scored 2 runs with 2 outs to beat us. Reese Stevenson had 3 hits and Cody Hall had 2 hits. We move to 3-3 on the young season and look forward to getting home and playing. 1st home game is tonight vs College Heights.

We beat Aurora 3-1 tonight for 3rd place on the Cassville tournament. Landon Terry pitched 7 innings giving up 4 hits 1 walk while striking out 7. Reese Stevenson, Austin Hancock, Cameron Terry, and Kevin Miller each had a hit. We played great defense, even with some spectacular plays by Reese at short. We move to 2-1 on the year. We play Diamond on Thursday there at 4:30.

1-1 With A Weird Finish!!

We opened up our Varsity play yesterday with a 11-1 win over Pierce City and 13-12 loss to Seneca. Against Pierce City, Riley Veith threw a no-hitter, walked 1, had 12 K's and 0 earned runs in 6 innings. Riley Veith and Landon Terry had 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Cody Hall had 2 RBI's also. In the night cap, we played Seneca to a 10-10 tie after 5 innings and the time limit was up. In this tournament, if there is a tie, you stop play and go to tie breakers. Tie breakers are runners that reach 3rd, then if still tied, runners that reach 2nd, then if still tied runners that reach 1st. Coach Yust and I both talked them into playing one more inning. After the 6th inning it was still tied. We campaigned for another innning. We got it. Before the 7th inning started, we were informed that both Seneca and us had the same amount of base runners reach 3rd during the first 6 innings. So as soon as the runner reached 3rd in the bottom of the 7th, even if we get 3 outs we would lose. They were not going to let us play any more extra innings. So with 2 outs and a runner on 3rd, we had to pick him off. I would rather lose with the ball in our hands than by some tie breaker rule. Kevin Miller had 3 hits and Reese Stevenson had 3 RBI's. We play Aurora at 4:45pm today for 3rd place at Cassville. See you all there.

JV beat Cassville 9th grade on Monday 7-3. Alex Mareth picks up the win. Brent Cornman had a triple and a RBI. Reese Veith had a 2 RBI single. Tuesday we lost 12-11 to Exeter and 14-0 to Miller. Cameron Terry pitched really well and began to run out of gas and a few mistakes lead to a big inning by Exeter. Miller was a big athletic Varisty team that did a lot of things right yesterday. I was very proud of the boys and the way they improved. Varsity will play at 2:30 tomorrow vs Pierce City at the Cassville Classic.

Busy week for Purdy Baseball. JV plays tonight at Cassville at 5PM vs Cassville 9th grade. One 7 inning game. Tomorrow, the JV travels to Sarcoxie to play in the Sarcoxie Tournament. Game times are at 3 and 5 vs Exeter and Miller. Our Varsity will pick up play on Thursday in the Cassville tournament. We play at 2:30 and 7 vs Pierce City and Seneca. The Lady Eagles have won the District and Sectional Championships over the past week and now face Fordland in the Quarterfinals at Logan Rogersville on Saturday at 2:45. Coach Hughes' Corner

I held off on this corner for a couple of reason's. I wanted to wait till after the beginning of March to hopefully brag about my fishing trip to Roaring River with my dad and the twins. And I can actually say I have something to brag about. Both boys caught there limit in about 20 minutes and Trey caught a 3 1/2 pound Rainbow Trout. I also wanted to wait till basketball was over to honor and congratulate the boys on a great season. They won 17 games and played some great games. I wrote this on Tuesday afternoon for my wife to be able to understand and feel the same things that I did. She was unable to go this year because Hunter had practice Tuesday morning for 5th and 6th grade.

This maybe long winded, because I am a proud father right now. One of my proudest moments as a father. I was honored to be accompanied to Roaring River this morning with my dad and my twin sons, Travis and Trey. They are 6 and have about 5 hours a piece of fishing time combined due to our busy schedule with baseball.

The trip started yesterday when we all made it down to my parents house. The boys went early and I showed up around midnight after getting home from officiating a district basketball game. My wife and oldest were unable to attend the opening morning tradition due to the oldest having basketball practice.

I used to fish at Roaring River on a weekly basis back when I was a teenager/early 20's, but the last time I was down there was last March 1st. (I live about 25 minutes from there). Since last opening day was the last time there, that was also the last time any of my trout rods had been messed with. So, at Midnight last night, I was fixing rods. After 3 hours of sleep, I woke the boys up. They are just like me. I hate mornings and am a pain to get up. But this morning they were up and dressed before I could say good morning.

We left Mom and Dads at 5:30 and made the short drive to the park. We got set up and found our normal spot open. We set our tackle and rods down and headed to the fire. At 6:15 we headed back to the spot. Keeping a 6 year old occupied when he is that close to water and fire for about an hour is hard to do. Add another and it is impossible. We made it to 6:18, and I hear, 'is it time yet', then again at 6:19, 6:20, 6:21, 6:22. You get the point.

Finally the horn goes off. Back to my first paragraph when I mentioned them not having a lot of experience. Well, my dad and I would cast for them and let them reel it in. Using a black rooster tail with one silver spinner and one a gold spinner, the boys doubled up on about the 3rd or 4th cast. This was pretty neat to watch. After a few more casts, Travis, the one I was casting for, had 3 fish working on 4. Travis was letting Trey know that he only had 1. Then Trey caught his 2nd. Then all of a sudden, BAM, Lunker on for Trey. With my dad helping him hold the pole up and even coaching him in the reeling in, he was trying to go faster than needed with 4 lb test line, he landed a 3 lb 8 oz Rainbow Trout. We immediately took pictures and he was back to the river bank for fish 4. Which he caught before Travis caught his 4th. In approximately 20 minutes, both had there limit and Trey had a lunker. They both were proud of there bounty and was grinning from ear to ear, and bragging to anyone that would listen. I just received a phone call saying he was even the winner of the Kids Lunker division that the local Chamber of Commerce puts on. So, I am sure bragging will continue.

As you can see from my story I am pretty excited for both of them. We took Trey's fish to the Taxidermist Tuesday night and should have it back in a few months. I also would like to thank my dad for being there with us. He took me when I was a boy and I would like to thank him for a great tradition that I now get to carry out with my boys.(Hunter has been going since he was 5 or 6, but missed due to basketball) Hopefully one of these days I can help my boys with there kids.

I know that some of you may already know this, but if you don't, the baseball team will be playing Lamar at Hammonds Field in Springfield after the Springfield Cardinals play the Arkansas Travelers on Sunday, May 8th. The Cardinals will play at 2:07pm and our game will follow. We have to sell 250 tickets but can purchase more. SO, please pass this on and get your tickets ASAP. We found out last week that we will be playing at Hammonds Field in Springfield, the home of the Springfield Cardinals and MSU Bears. We will play Lamar on May 8th after the Cardinals play. Well, it is 2011 and it has started off with a bang for the Purdy Athletics. I first want to congratualate the basketball teams for a very successful 1st half of the year. The Lady Eagles have had some big wins and find theirselves ranked number 1 in the state in class 2. They have 4 losses, but to 4 quality teams. Mt. Vernon is ranked in glass 3, Kickapoo and Ozark are quality programs, and they lost to a class 6 Arkansas team. I have been lucky to get to see a couple of games and have been really impressed with the defensive side of there game and how much it has improved. Keep it up ladies!

The boys also have 4 loses and have been playing really well of late. They have not lost this year(2011) and have rattled of some impressive wins over conference rival Southwest and Class 1 State ranked Billings. And then some good Class 3 teams in East Newton(2x) and Pierce City. I have seen the boys play 4 games, 3 being in the holliday tournament at Southwest and the Southwest game at home back in December. I get to see these boys on the baseball field and have always said they have a great chemistry. It is really showing on the hardwood. Keep it up fellows.

Then comes baseball. I know most of you are still in the basketball frame of mind, (which is great) but I found out this past weekend that the Purdy Baseball team is preseason ranked! #5 in class 2 in the state of Missouri. This comes as a little bit of a surprise. This is due to all the hard work that they players(present and past) has put in to make the program successful and make other coach's and media outlets notice us. We now will have a big target on our back early. I have received 3 emails since Monday from opponents coach's saying congratulations. So, they have noticed and have probably already mentioned it to their guys. Rightfully so, I would do the same thing. Put a little fire under the belt early. Any motivation to enhance a teams chance of performing big is a great coaching tool, if used right. I know this is said all the time when it comes to rankings, but the most important is the end of the year one. But, like I told someone this week already, this group of boys will not lose sight of the importance of working hard.

WOW! A whole year has went and gone since the first Coach Hughes' Corner was posted. December 16th was the 1st one. I would like feedback on this. Mark McGwire admitted to using steroids. I gave my point of view on this on the January Corner. The Cardinals also signed Matt Holliday to a long term deal. I was sick and tired of the weather and wanted the spring to hurry and get here. I am probably getting that bug already, and it is not even Christmas yet.

This Corner covered a part of my youth that was very important to me. I went over the first memories of the spring and playing ball in the back yard. I again mentioned I didn't like the weather. Seeing a trend here. I brought up that Practice starts soon for the Spring 2010 Season. (OH YEAH)

This was the Politic Corner. I was asked a question by the KKBL radio guy at the boys basketball game about Private vs Public schools. I went into the goods and bads on this. So, after I put my answers on there, I talked a little about our team. Good post, that I totally forgot about.

This was a fun post. I did the situation post regarding my thinking on baseball situations and why or what I would do. I really enjoyed this one. This was also at the time of the Spring season on full swing. I posted that we had a chance to share a conference title if we beat Exeter, which we later did to share the conference crown.

Must of been hibernating. Didn't get to post a corner. Probably just a bit lazy, mixed in with limited computer access over the summer.(I am poor and cheap and don't have internet at the house) SO, we will assume that I had some good points and would of made some awesome Corners. OK, deal!

September Corner is one of the most heartfelt and awesome posts I have done. I meant every word of it and am still to this day thankful for the ones that have helped our program. It isn't where it is just because of me and the boys. Each one of you had a big impact in this program. I also posted something that I feel strong about, my wife. I also put this on here, makes since, huh, "Big things can happen with the support of everyone. And I, just one coach, Thank each and everyone of you for that support."

October's post was just plain out fun. I got to relive a few memories and give some props to some important individuals just like in September, the graduated players. I loved doing this and know that I will remember every individual for some thing they did for me or this program. Life is short, so remembering these guys and being involved in there lives is a great honor. Thanks

This post was one of my rants about me and what I do to get through the wonderful Missouri winters. I can tell you that I really enjoyed this one too. I got to share some of my other passions other than baseball. I am proud of who I am and what I do and like to share it with others.

I hope each of you have time to go back and look at all of these, I have never looked at them after the initial time they were posted. Makes for some good reading and really enjoyed this past year doing this Corner. I will try to make it monthly, even in the summer months.

Remember that it is that time of year, CHRISTmas, to give and help those out that are less fortunate than us. The stress of this time of year can sometimes ruin a day, a week, or even a life. I know that stress can set someone off(it did me this morning and I regret every second it does), just remember to look at the good stuff that you have. Some people will not get a Christmas dinner, a present, time with love ones, and moments that they will want to remember for a lifetime. For the most part, we will have all of these. Merry Christmas from just one Coach and his family.

As all of the leaves are gone from the trees, rain will turn to snow, and we will be one more day closer to Spring, I set here wondering how I will make it through the winter. Don't get me wrong, I actually love the winter(more less Fall). I love the cooler temperatures after being in the hot summer months of Southwest Missouri. I love the MLB playoffs (Yes even when the Cardinals are beat out by the Reds). I love the cool crisp mornings of deer hunting. The first snow on the ground, that causes the first snow day. I even like the holiday's, at times. But most of all, I like the fact that it is one more day closer to the Spring Baseball Season!

Let me explain my thoughts of Winter, from a different point of view. I played Basketball and really enjoyed the games. I was nothing on the court compared to teammates, opponents, and even some that didn't play. But I could hold my own. I scored some and tried to play defense, but as you can see from my height and birth given build, I was to short, fat, and stocky to be to good at Basketball. So, I played to get through the winter and be with my buddies. That is kind of why I took up refereeing basketball, plus the money is an added bonus. Basketball is an indoor sport, so it makes sense to play it in the winter. So we have to make it through the winter with basketball. With that said, I really believe our basketball programs are headed in the right direction. We have some outstanding athletes and a great coaching staff. I look forward to trying to catch some games between my own refereeing schedule. So, I make it through the winter watching/refereeing basketball.

As you can see from the picture on my last post, I like to hunt. I didn't take up deer hunting until about 7 years ago, but I hunted since I was able to tag a long with my dad and grandpa. They took me quail hunting every chance they could. I started carrying a single shot shotgun when I was old enough and after numerous hunts sharing my grandpas 20 gauge. Not just being able to feel the thrill of finding a covey and watching a pointer or setter work a ditch full of birds, but also just being outdoors in God's creation. That is what I think about most winters. As the quail, deer, rabbit's, and/or squirrels fight to survive and to find that food source, it reminds me of how great we have it. I love to watch these animals, along with others, do there everyday thing. It is also a great way to provide food for my family and friends. I am not in a point in my life that I can raise livestock to eat, but do have family that help provide that. So, I make it through the winter filling our freezer.

I also enjoy the holidays. We have numerous traditions in our family that change and stay the same every year. My sister and I used to lay in bed the night before Christmas and listen to my grandma read 'The Night Before Christmas' She has passed on, but I try to remember that every holiday. My wife's family used to always get a real tree. The first few years we were married we did this with her family. We went and bought a fake tree a few years ago. It made it through a few Christmas's but now we will be out looking for that perfect real one again this year. Thanksgiving is also Christmas with my family. We will be doing Thanksgiving at noon on Thursday and Christmas after supper with my Dad's side of the family. My cousins come from Louisiana and we share both holidays on one day with my Grandpa. Makes for a long but great day. So, I make it through the winter enjoying the holidays.

How many of you can remember growing up looking forward to snow. I don't like a lot of it, but that first time it snows, whether it is November or March, I love it. When the ground is covered and you find out school is canceled for that one moment, you think the world is perfect.(until 9am and you have nothing to do) But you always remember that feeling. So, I make it through the winter looking and waiting for that 1st snow day.

So, I make it through the winter passing time and finding something to do to make it go by quicker. Why? Because if I make it through the winter, then that means I have one more spring to enjoy baseball. And, as most of you know, baseball is pretty important to me.

Don't forget to be thankful for all God has done to bless you, even in times that you may not be blessed. Remember, when your body aches, someone else may not even be able to feel pain, or if you don't like what your wearing, someone might not even have clothes to wear. Just be thankful! Happy Thanksgiving and have a good weekend holiday

It is that time again for some insight to what this guy is thinking. I have done this now for almost a year and seem to be lost every time I do one(or everyday). I have searched and searched for some type of topic and can't find one that would be interesting to most readers. So, with that said, I am going to take this time to recognize some past players for there achievements. I will miss some of you and I do apologize. But this is about the ones that have had a true impact in my time here at Purdy. This falls after seeing a bunch of those guys play a couple of Saturdays ago.

Lets start with one individual that had it stacked against him when I got to Purdy. Dustin Moore was ineligible the first fall. He asked if he could practice with the team and then play when his grades were up in the fall. I was told by numerous people that he would be a trouble maker. I told them that everyone gets a chance with me. And boy was I glad I gave him that chance. He not only played for us that spring(his senior year) but batted 3 hole and played shortstop. He later went on to join the armed forces and is currently making a good life for himself. He told me a few years later that I was one of the reasons he made better choices. Good luck Dustin.

One truly remarkable performance over the 6 years I have been here has to be the pitching performance of Corey Moller at Forsyth in the Sectional game his senior year. Not very many know this, but that date was exactly a year to the day from when he lost his older brother. Corey pretty much dominated one of the better teams in the state for 6 innings and earned the win to move us to the quarterfinal game vs Houston. He has now moved to Oklahoma and is currently working on a Sports Business/Management degree. He has asked me to be his best man in his wedding in a couple of years. This is a honor and a privilege that he has bestowed on me.

One of the best athletes that I have coached at Purdy comes in the form of Spencer Terry. He was the one that probably also gave me some of these gray hairs that are now slowly creeping onto my head. He caused me many nights of sleeplessness and gave me small forms of heart attacks at times. He is now one of the biggest supporters of me and this program. Everytime I see him, he is always asking about the team and me and my family. This young man has grown up and is currently working towards helping others as a volunteer fire fighter and EMT.

Derek Daley and Ryan Veith were sophomores when I came to Purdy. Both were very raw but very talented. Derek started the first fall game of that year at short. It didn't take me long to realize that was not going to work. Every ball hit his way turned him into a NHL goalie. He would use his body and keep it in front of him but hardly ever threw any one out because he would not have enough time to make the throw. This is when he became my catcher and was one of the best blocking catchers I have seen at the high school level. Ryan became my center fielder after the 1st week of practice that fall. I told him that he was it and told him it was his job to lose. After jerking him out of a game at Blue Eye for missing a cutoff twice, he never missed an inning in center field(unless we were experimenting with him pitching). He earned All-State 2nd Team his senior year with his bat and glove. Both of these young men are working in the area and being an asset to the community.

Josh Wiseman was one of those kids that every coach does not know what to do with. He always found a way into the games or played hard when giving an opportunity. So, he earned more and more playing time. As a senior, he was a big part of our pitching staff and earned honors that he deserved. Josh has pitched in small colleges the last two years and is currently looking to play this coming spring. He has also returned to our practices on numerous occasions to help.

Blake Williams was one that you wanted to play. No matter what he did, he worked his tale off. He is currently playing basketball in college rehabbing a knee injury. Blake was a big part of a lot of wins, no bigger then the 3 run homer he hit to help us win a conference championship his Sophomore year.

Trent Goetz was one of the reasons why I am at Purdy(ok, maybe not exactly, but close). He started all 4 years and was Honorable Mention All-State his senior year. Trent is the true meaning of a team player. Early in his career he gave up a lot of at bats to bunt guys over or draw a walk to get things going behind him. He currently holds the team record(since I have been here, 6 years) for saves in a year. He, along with his classmates were involved in over 100 wins in his 4 years. Trent currently is working on his degree.

Chris Bennett is the only player I have had to hit a pinch hit homerun as a freshmen. He is also the only player I have seen take a ball in the face at third and it doesn't even look like it hurt. I cried more when he got hit then he did. Chris took his ability and made the best of it to help the team win. Chris is currently at Missouri Southern working on his degree.

Mason Roller was a 3 time All-State selection. Mason made coaching easy. Just get guys on in front of him and let him drive them in. If you noticed me stretching my arm when he was in the on deck circle, it wasn't for pitching purposes. It was due to me having to wave runners in almost consistently when he batted(I didn't want to tear anything). Mason is currently playing at Drury University in Springfield and if we had a way to count past and present, he probably holds the all time school records for career homeruns and RBI's. If you doubt that, let me know. I would put his numbers up to about anyones.

Daniel Burnside played 3 1/2 years and was named Purdy Baseball MVP his senior year. He never consistently started until his senior year and boy did he make the best of it. He lead the team in hitting and RBI's his senior year. He also lead the team in Happy Meals. Not sure what that means, but as a freshmen I believe is how he earned that.

Caleb Willey is the one player that graduated that I pulled for the most during his four years. After being hit in the head numerous times as a underclassmen during practice taking fly balls, I didn't know if he would ever make it. But he sure did and then some. He was a everyday starter his senior year and helped his team to a share of the conference title. He is truly the image I get when I think of team player. Even as a senior, we had trouble keeping him in the dugout when a foul ball was hit. We would have to tell him that he was on deck and to not go after foul balls.

I know I have missed some, but not on purpose. I know Alan Miller, Austin Tate, Terre Brown, Brian Holloway, are a few that have left this program but I haven't heard from them in a long time.

I have had 4 assistant coach's in these 6 years. My first year was with Coach Chris Kennedy, he is now coaching basketball at Hollister. The 2nd year was with Craig Moody who is coaching basketball at Dixon, MO. Stuart Lombard helped me in year 3 and 4. He is currently working on his own business, Ballpark Graphics, in Wheaton MO. Chris Branstetter is helping now.

Alumni Baseball Game a Huge Success!!

Purdy High School Baseball Team won another game this weekend. However, it wasn't your normal game and it wasn't easy. The high school team beat 20 individuals from the age of 19-45. The Purdy Alumni Game was played on Saturday with the high school team winning 12-11 in a 9 inning game. The alumni jumped on top 1st with a 4 run 3rd inning. The High School Team scored 6 runs in the 3rd. After going back in forth with the Alumni team, the high school team went into the 9th with a 4 run lead. The alumni team showed some savvy and battled back within 1 and had the tying run on base when the final out was made. Tyler Faulk (2001 graduate)was named MVP going 2-2 with 2 HR's and 3 RBI's and a walk. Coy Utter(2003 graduate) pitched 2 innings allowing only 1 walk and striking out 4 and added a solo shot of his own. I want to personally thank each one of you that either showed up to play or support the players and to the parents and grandparents that made the chili supper a huge success. After paying for all the concession stand items, we made $586.06. This was a huge success. I would like you to post your comments on how we could make it even better down the road. Thank you again for your support.

Win Ends Our Fall Season!

Sorry for this late entry. Was busy yesterday with working on the softball fields for district softball. Don't miss the Purdy Lady Eagles tonight at 6pm vs Diamond in the semifinals of the District Playoffs.

We beat Blue Eye 10-8 to end our fall with a record of 17-2. Riley picked up the win pitching 6 innings and Landon Terry was 3-4 and Kevin Miller was 4-5. I will get some stats together to end the fall and hopefully the Monett Times is doing an article to finish off our Fall Season.

Reminder: Alumni game is this Saturday. Be there to support the program and spend time with some old friends.

Big Win Over Forsyth!

We beat Forsyth 18-0 last night in 5 innings. Kevin Miller earned his 4th win of the fall (4-0) while striking out 5 and only allowing one hit and walking 1. Cody Hall and Devon Bennett each had 3 hits. Kevin Miller had 2 hits to help hisself on the mound. We moved our overall record to 16-2 with one game left tonight at Blue Eye at 5pm. Another Tough Loss!

We got beat on Friday night 7-6 for our 2nd loss of the year(15-2). We had some errors and some walks that cost us some runs, but also had numerous chances to score runs and couldn't push another big inning across the board. We scored 5 runs in the 3rd and 1 run in the 6th. But couldn't contribute any runs in the other innings. We play tonight at Forsyth at 5 PM.

It took 16 games before we earned our first loss. Morrisville beat us 5-4 in the championship game of the Crane Wood Bat tournament. We had a few costly mistakes and couldn't over come a 3 run deficit in the later innings. Riley Veith takes the loss with pitching 5 and 1/3 innings giving up 5 runs, 3 hits, 3 BB's, while striking out 4. Kevin Miller pitched relief and kept us in the ball game. Cody Hall had 2 hits with 1 RBI. We play Clever tonight at Clever at 5.

Alumni Baseball Game

Here is some more information for the Alumni Baseball Game. It seems to be some confusion on times. It will start with batting practice/greet and meet at 10am on Saturday October the 9th. Game will start at 11am. We will play one 9 inning game with the alumni vs the High School Purdy Eagles. The cost is $20 to play as a alumni and this will get you a free shirt and 9 innings of fun and laughter. After the game we will have a chili supper in the school cafeteria. This will be for all alumni, family, friends, and high school players. The cost for the chili supper has not been set, but plan on supporting the baseball team and enjoy the activities. We will also announce the Alumni MVP at the chili supper. I am looking forward to this and plan on making this an annual thing.

We moved to 15-0 with a win last night over Exeter. We hit the ball well and got great pitching. After a lead off walk, Reese Stevenson settled in and did not allow another walk or a hit in pitching a 5 inning no hitter. We scored 3 runs in the 1st on a 2 out bases loaded triple by Devon Bennett. Cody Hall got us going with a lead off homerun in the 3rd. We ended up scoring 10 runs in the 3rd inning to put the game away. We play at Crane tomorrow(Thursday) vs Morrisville in the Championship game of the Crane Wood Bat Tournament. Then play at Clever on Friday. Both game times are at 5 PM. See you there!!

I believed I was asked that question above 10 times last week. And yes we played Wheaton again for the 4th time and came out on top for a 4th time. 10-1 win on Friday night moved our record to 14-0. We played well early on and hit the ball hard to put up 9 runs in the first two innings. None was hit harder than the 3 run homer by Cody Hall that cleared way above the score board. We also got another excellent performance from Riley Veith on the mound. He pitched a complete game just allowing the 1 run. We coasted in the later innings and didn't put them away in 5 innings. We had our chances and came up short a few times, but Riley kept throwing strikes and didn't let Wheaton back in the game. We play Exeter at home on Tuesday. Last home game of the fall. A Little Test From Crane

We got our first real test of the fall last night when we were down 1-0 after 5 innings. We struggled putting the ball and bat together and when we did, we popped up or hit it right at someone. We finally got started in the 6th inning after a leadoff single by Riley Veith and a bunt single by Landon Terry. Cody Hall drew a walk to load the bases and after a Crane balk to tie the score, Kevin Miller came up big with a 2 RBI triple. We would add another run on a ground out later in the inning and with stand a Crane rally in the bottom of the 6th to win 4-2. This win moved us to 13-0 on the season and shows us that we can score late in a game to win. We play Wheaton today if we can get the field to dry out in time. See you all there.

Miller and the Long Ball Moves Us to 12-0!

Reese Stevenson lead off the game with a solo homerun on the 1st pitch of the game and Devon Bennett added a solo bomb in the 2nd to support Kevin Millers pitching performance against Billings. Kevin allowed 2 runs over 7 innings while striking out 4 and walking 0 to move us to 12-0 on the Fall Season. Devon finished the night with 3 hits and 3 RBI's. Reese had 2 hits and 2 RBI's. We play Crane at Crane on Thursday at 5. See you all there.

Purdy Fall Classic Champions

We beat Wheaton on Friday night to earn a 1st place finish in our Fall Classic. We played well the entire week, in winning 5 games in a week. But the final game was the icing on the cake. We beat Wheaton in 6 innings 10-0. Riley Veith pitched as well as he can and the result was obvious of that. He allowed 1 hit, 1 BB, while striking out 9. Both the walk and hit was erased by a pick off and caught stealing to allow Riley to face the minimum of 18 hitters in 6 innings. Austin Hancock continued to hit since being inserted in the lineup. He was 3-3 with 2 infield singles and 2 runs scored. Riley added 2 hits of his own and Devon Bennett added 3 RBI's. In the last 6 games(Since the Wednesday game vs Spokane at Crane), our pitchers have only allowed 8 hits and 7 runs. This gives us the opportunity to win on any given night. Our pitching staff has consistently dominated the opponent most of the year. We have a team ERA of 2.14 and an opponent average of .121. We have given up 28 hits in 67 innings pitched. I also don't want to forget about our defense. We had no errors on Friday night, and have only had 14 total on the year. We now turn to one of the toughest parts of our schedule taking our 11-0 record on the road tonight to face Billings at 5.

Good Start to the Purdy Fall Classic!

Despite rain on Wednesday night, we were still able to get our games in last night on the 1st day of the Purdy Fall Classic. We played Hurley the 1st game of the night and came out on top 6-1. Reese Stevenson picked up the win pitching 7 innings and striking out 10. He walked 3 and gave up 2 hits and 1 earned run. Cody Hall got us on the board in the 1st with a 2 run Homer and followed it up with another 2 run Homer in the 3rd. Wheaton and Hurley played the second game of the night with Wheaton coming out on top in 5 innings. We then played Exeter in the 3rd and final game of the night. Landon Terry gets the win while pitching 5 innings and striking out 10 in a 14-0 win in 5 innings. Riley Veith was 3-3 with 4 RBI's. Today's games start at 4pm with Exeter playing Hurley. At 6pm, Wheaton and Exeter play. We play Wheaton following that game.

Changes on our Schedule!

We have some quick changes to let you know about. The Sept 30th game with Exeter has been moved to Sept 28th. Same place and time, just date change. The Championship game of the Crane Wood Bat tournament is scheduled for Sept 30th at Crane at 5:00pm. Please pass this on. Also, don't forget about the Blue Eye game that has been changed to October 5th.

Win and Move On!

We did just that. A 2-0 win over Wheaton and Kyle Robbins put us in the championship game of the Crane Wood Bat Tournament. We scored in the 1st with out recording a hit. A walk, stolen base and moved over by a bunt put Reese Stevenson at 3rd with 1 out. Landon Terry hit a ground ball to the right side to drive in a run. In the second with 2 outs Cameron Terry laced one down the Left field line for a single. He stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on the error by the catcher on a throw to 3rd. That was enough for Kevin Miller. He pitched outstanding. 7 innings, 7 k's, 3 hits, 0 BB's. He is now 2-0 on the year. We play today at 4 and 8 in our tournament if we can get the field ready. Stay tuned and I will try to get updates regarding the field.

We moved to 7-0 last night with a 18-0 win over Spokane in 5 innings. Cameron Terry got his first Varsity start on the mound pitching 4.2 innings and striking out 8 and walking 2, only allowing 1 hit. He was also 2-4 with 2 doubles. Devon Bennett and Reese Stevenson were both 3-4 with 4 RBI's coming from Devon. Austin Hancock was 3-3 in his first start in the offensive lineup. We play Wheaton tomorrow at 7pm at Billings to make up the Crane tournament game.
